At Driving School Chester we believe that the ability to drive is a key life skill that should be available to all, this is why we are now recognised Autism Champions by Autism Together.

We take pride in our teaching practices that benefit all learners! From the Neurotypical to individuals on the autistic spectrum or who have other learning challenges such as, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, etc.

How our lessons are Structured

Our lessons are structured and focus on simple processes that build up lesson by lesson, at a pace that is suitable to the learner, which we believe produces safe and knowledgeable drivers for life.

Signs we know to look out for

We believe that it is so important to check throughout the lessons a learner’s perception, understanding and emotional engagement. We regularly ask our learners how they feel about the task/exercise they are undertaking; we’re trained in assessing body language, concentration levels and to look out for individual triggers. We discuss real-life driving situations and give examples of both good and poor driving practices and the results of these outcomes.

We acknowledge that all learners will have problems with the process, complexity and fluidity of the learning situations they encounter from lessons to lesson. However, our strategies and techniques enable them to overcome those obstacles with careful, considerate instructions and responses to situations as they arise.

One size does not fit all

We know and understand that we all learn in different ways and have different experiences of learning. With that in the forefront of our minds, we adapt all lessons to an individual’s needs.

Examples of adaptations

We tailor and adapt lessons to best promote an individuals preferred learning style.

  • Repeating Instructions
  • Bite-size amounts of information
  • Use of visual aids which may be training manuals, apps on iPads or instructor demonstrations
  • Provide a lesson plan before the lesson starts

A few of the Driving School Chester instructors actually have children with varying degrees of learning challenges. By meeting our children’s challenges on a day to day basis, this has given us the knowledge and confidence when training an individual who isn’t neurotypical.

We have been able to bring this wealth of experience into the training of the Driving School Chester team and through our shared experiences we want to make driving a more inclusive life skill. Not only will it enable more people to become more independent but it could increase chances of employment and turn into a higher standard of living.
